LETTER FROM: Bonita Springs Estero EDC Chairman of the Board, Vince Modarelli

LETTER FROM: Bonita Springs Estero EDC Chairman of the Board, Vince Modarelli

We at The Bonita Springs Estero Economic Development Council are willing to take our show on the road when necessary to support the local economy. Most recently, we shipped our CEO Christine Ross to Capitol Hill to personally tell our Senators that we expect more from them regarding the new flood insurance rate hikes. Our EDC has heard from local companies how the new flood insurance rates, precipitated by the Biggert-Waters Act, have the real potential to put them out of business.

In early January, an important bill to delay those disastrous increases was to be voted on in the Senate. While Senator Bill Nelson was outspoken in his support of the delay, Marco Rubio was conspicuously silent on the topic, only responding to our requests with robo-emails. We needed Senator Rubio’s support, so we sent our Chief to tell him so in person. After a major newspaper caught wind of her efforts, the media started asking why he was so silent on this vital issue. That day, Senator Rubio voiced his strong support for the delay. Mission accomplished.

We don’t know the final outcome of all the votes and exactly what effect they will have on flood insurance rates in Bonita and Estero. But we do know that we expect our representatives in Washington to remember that we are paying attention. And now they know we will come calling if they forget.

Sincerely,
Vince Modarelli
